Things I loved: 2009

2009 was a year of incredible people, places, and events for me and the boat was thoroughly shaken. Here are some that stood out for me as awesome. In no particular order:

  • Kink.Com has been one place that feels more and more like home for me every time I visit. Working for their sites means being well cared for by intelligent people who are all passionate about sexuality. Not once did my request for a condom get snubbed or looked down upon, not once did my need for a break result in a sneer, and there was always a friendly production assistant ready with a fuzzy robe and a hug. When you get your porn from Kink.Com you’re getting it from good people who treat their models with respect. I was very happy to work with them throughout 2009 and I look forward to many more years and shoots there.
  • My stovetop espresso maker! I’m a coffee nut and drip coffee doesn’t always pack the punch I need to manage a 40+ hour work week at my day job, a weekly shift at SFSI, late nights writing, time with friends, the occasional modeling job, and laser pointer time with the kitties.
  • Along the same vein, Wicked Grounds was a great place to rub elbows with fellow kinksters and enjoy more good coffee and quality foods.
  • NJoy Butt plugs! I’m a sex toy snob and these are so fantastic I can’t speak highly enough of them. Their designs are delectable, they’re smooth, I can wear them for long periods of time, easy to clean and sterilize, and gorgeous to look at. I’m buying stock in these puppies. Every year there is a newly hyped toy and only a few will live on for years to come. When I have a Hitachi on my clit and an NJoy toy in my ass I am a happy girl. Add coffee to the mix and I’m set for the night.
  • Lots of great bloggers! Although I’m not always the best at updating, I love reading the adventures of my fellow travelers on the internet. The sex positive blogosphere has blossomed with sex workers, advocates, and amazing members of people who prove time and time again that the biggest sex organ is the brain. Thanks to Mistress Matisse, May Ling Su, Shazam SF, Sex in the Public Square, and too many others to mention. I would also like to specially mention that it was great to see voices organize to tell the porn model side of the story in the great Matt Smith debacle and the now infamous internet take down of Alexa DiCarlo whose blog is now defunct.
  • So many great friends and partners who supported me when I was down, made me laugh, and helped me stand tall as the woman I am. Some of them you might see out at events, others are on camera, many you will never see hide nor hair of but they make their loving presence known in the fact I keep coming back for me. To every single one of you, thank you for being in my life.
  • The continuing rise in voices from sex workers. There is a renaissance happening all around you. One of the major figures in porn is Sasha Grey who fucks on camera and can quote Nietzche. Strippers spin sonnets, massage parlor girls tweet in between full body releases, and the way people view us as sex workers is going to change dramatically in the coming years. Everyone has been exposed to porn. With the rise in technology, more people do web cam shows on their own as amateurs. Sex work is being reconsidered by the mainstream much in the way that tattoos have. When a growing percentage of your generation participates in something it starts to shed its stigma and taboo. In ten years it is going to be much less of a issue that I participated in the adult industry because by that point we will all have been naked on the internet. I think this is awesome.
  • BART or Bay Area Rapid Transit has been part of daily routine all year long. I know the ebb and flow of the trains, I recognize people with the same commute as I have, I’ve watched funny hijinks and stood in horror at the violence that occurred at the start of 2009 in response to a shooting of a man named Oscar Grant. When you rely on public transit, you are continually interacting with other people in the way car travelers don’t. Living car-free has been exciting. It keeps me in shape, I get to fit more novel reading into my life, and I do secretly enjoy the fact that you never know who you may be riding next to on your way to work. It just may be a porn starlet on her way to a shoot. Think about that one next time you hop on public transit because unless you’re in the business it’s not likely to be the case when you drive.
  • My trip to Africa was obviously a big highlight. It forever changed my perception of my place in the world and shook me up in more ways than one. Wow.
  • The City of San Francisco for being always alive and active. The city is its own character in my world. I love finding old cigar ads painted on the side of buildings, I love that a massive suspension bridge stands as a Statue of Liberty and a totem of sexual freedom, I love the murals that adorn its walls, I love its street festivals, I love its fog. I love burritos, sushi, and Indian food in the middle of the night.

There are many other great parts of this year that aren’t mentioned, but I must be off to open a vein for an AIM test so that I can keep performing as a healthy adult for you all. I hope everyone has a fantastic new year.
